3 Reasons Why Your Outlets Aren’t Working

Are the power outlets in your home not working? This can be frustrating and inconvenient, learn why this might be happening on our blog!

We rely on electricity more than ever to power our electrical appliances and ensure that all our devices are charged. So, when you are dealing with outlets that aren’t working, it can be a real problem. At Mackey Services, we are available to help you diagnose and fix broken outlets. Here’s a look at common causes of outlet problems and how to fix them.

1. Tripped Circuit Breaker

The first thing to check is whether there’s a tripped circuit breaker. A circuit breaker can trip if an outlet has been overloaded or a short circuit has occurred. Typically, a single circuit will control several outlets, so it’s a good idea to check to see if nearby outlets are working. If they aren’t, the problem most likely is a tripped circuit breaker.

When this happens, the breaker lever for the affected circuit in the electrical panel will usually flip over to the middle or off position. First, unplug any devices from the affected outlets. Then, switch the circuit breaker back on. Be sure that your outlets aren’t overloaded to prevent the issue from occurring again. If it does happen again with no apparent cause, call in an electrician to check out the issue.

2. Your GFCI Outlet Has Tripped

Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets are used in areas that are exposed to water, such as kitchens and bathrooms. These outlets are designed to quickly shut off power if they get wet. This protects you and your home. You can easily tell if the outlet you’re dealing with is a GFCI outlet because they have test and reset buttons located between the plugs. If your dead outlet is a GFCI, you may be able to get it working again by simply pushing the reset button.

3. Loose or Faulty Connecting Wires

Loose or faulty connecting wires can be a reason for malfunctioning outlets. Outlets with faulty wiring may buzz, feel hot, or emit a burning smell. Loose connections can cause similar problems. If you suspect a wiring issue, it’s important to reach out to an electrician as soon as possible to address the issue.

When an outlet is not working correctly, it can be a challenging problem to diagnose. Hiring a professional electrician is an ideal way to detect the problem. At Mackey Services, we want you to have a safe, fully functional electrical system.
