How Come Your HVAC System Keeps Tripping the Breaker?

If your HVAC system keeps tripping the breaker, you have a problem that shouldn’t be ignored. The breaker trips because there’s been an electrical overload that could start a fire. What could be causing the breaker to trip repeatedly?

The First Thing to Do

If your breaker tripping is a one-time thing, turn your AC system off at the thermostat. Wait for a half-hour, flip the breaker to the on position, and restart your air conditioner. If everything goes back to normal, the breaker tripping could have just been caused by a power surge.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter can cause the breaker to trip. As it restricts airflow, your AC system has to draw more electricity and can trip the breaker. Change the filter at least every 90 days.

Dirty Outside AC Unit

The outside part of your AC system may be clogged with dirt. If it can’t disperse heat, the outdoor AC unit will keep running to disperse heat until it trips the breaker. You should schedule AC maintenance every spring, as part of this service includes cleaning the outside AC unit.

Hard Starts

The main part of your AC system is the compressor. If the compressor breaks down, the AC unit may start having hard starts. The compressor demands more power, which trips the circuit breaker. If this is the problem, you probably need a new AC system.

Loose Wires

It might be a loose wire that’s causing the problem. When you have maintenance performed on your AC system, the technician will inspect wires and electrical connections to prevent this problem.

Faulty Circuit Breaker

It could be the circuit breaker that’s the problem rather than your AC system. In addition to HVAC services we also provide electrical services and can help you with this.
